Another Robinson Adventure is about to begin ...

I am sitting in my dining room sorting photos from our recent trip to Cancun, Mexico. We flew to Cancun on December 26 with our entire immediate family, 6 adults and 5 grandchildren, ranging in age from 16 down to 9 months. It was a trip we had long-imagined but finding a week when everyone was available and willing to travel was a challenge. But it finally happened and the weather, the friendships, the resort were all perfect. For us, it was a wonderful opportunity to be all together and enjoy one another without any obligations to be elsewhere.

Of course, it all came to an end as real life beckoned - work and school demanded attention and Jim and I were comfortably settled in our own home. But not for long ...

We are heading off again next week, this time to Southeast Asia. Our flight path is long ... Toronto, Chicago, Tokyo, and finally Ho Chi Minh City in South Vietnam. A few days to recover there and then boarding a train that will take us up the east coast of Vietnam to Hanoi. In Hanoi, we will join a river cruise on the Mekong, 16 days in length. This will be a new experience for us as we have never been on a river cruise before. After the cruise ends, we will embark on a self-guided land tour of Laos, Cambodia and Thailand before heading home at the beginning of March.

As in past adventures, my goal is to regularly record our experiences in this blog. I will also include a few photos. Hopefully, the gods will provide reliable internet service so I can send updates to you.

  Tuesday, January 27, 2026 As much as we have fully enjoyed Hanoi and the wonderful hotel we stayed in, it is time to move on. Pack the suitcases again; put the clean laundry in the bags. Check out was at noon, followed by a short taxi ride around a lake and a park to a new hotel (Anatole Hotel) and a somewhat upscale neighbourhood where we will meet our companions for an organized tour that we are taking for the next 16 days. (Emerald Tours) A new experience for us, to be sure.   The hotel staff greeted us with warmth, a cup of tea and some wonderful snacks (coated dried lime peel and coated apricots – both delicious). We waited patiently until our room was ready and then were escorted to a wonderful corner suite with everything we could ever have hoped for. From Viet Nam to Cambodia

Tuesday, February 3, 2026   This trip so far has been very active. We have had many consecutive full days of travelling and exploring the communities we are visiting. Although there were some excursions planned for today, I took the day off. A low key day was just what I needed. I caught up on sleep, worked on the blog and added to our photo book. Jim went for a walk by himself in the morning and spent the afternoon planning the continuation of our adventure following the end of this tour. For both of us,  it was a much needed relaxing day. We did go for walk along our hotel street late in the afternoon. The street was narrow and the traffic was crazy. It felt like we could be knocked over at any moment so it was a short walk. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at our hotel overlooking the river. Then we were invited to join a lively group of people who were enjoying karaoke at one of the hotel bars on the river front. Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, Thailand to Vientiane, Laos by Bus, Plane and Train

Saturday, February 14, 2026   Happy Valentine’s Day   This morning started early.  By 7 am, our bags had to be packed and placed in the corridor to be loaded onto the bus that was going to whisk us away from our ship. A quick breakfast and we were ushered off the boat and into a bus. It was difficult to say farewell to the hard-working crew who had met our every request for the last two weeks.   The bus was headed for the Cu Chi Tunnels, about a two hour drive. It was a beautiful sunny day and we travelled through agricultural countryside and many small towns.  Duc, our guide, regaled us with information and stories about the history of the Tunnels. The Viet Nam war is very real for him as he lived through the horror of losing family and friends during the brutal battles that reflected the conflict.
